In order to assist University faculty, staff and students to navigate the rules and standards for protecting sensitive personal information, the Office of Audit, Compliance and Ethics serves as a central resource for privacy related issues and assists in the development of programs and practices to meet relevant privacy requirements and standards.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), also known as the Buckley Amendment, is a statement on protection
of rights and privacy of students as required by federal law. The Office of the Attorney General, the Office of the Registrar, the Director of Risk Management for Student Affairs and the Assistant Director of Compliance/Privacy are designated to assist with the interpretation and implementation of FERPA.
Identity Theft Program – Red Flags Rule
The federal “Red Flags Rule” regulations require the University to implement a program to prevent and combat the effects of identity theft. The University’s Identity Theft Prevention Program includes policies and procedures for detecting, preventing and mitigating the effects of identity theft. If you suspect that identity theft is occurring, please contact your supervisor immediately. Supervisors should in turn immediately contact the Office of Audit, Compliance and Ethics.
Social Security Numbers
Efforts have been underway for some time to reduce the use of the Social Security Number at the University of Connecticut.
The University has established a policy restricting the use to certain legitimate uses (for example, for employment and tax purposes, for financial aid purposes, and where required by an external entity).
